Alice Mae Hassell Parks, 91, of 227 Hawthorne Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2017, in Vidant Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Parks was born in Chowan County on December 14, 1925, and was the daughter of the late William Benjamin and Alice Victoria Jones Hassell. Employed with the George C. Moore Company for 20 years, she had also worked as a care-giver for the elderly, and had volunteered with Hospice. A member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she had formerly taught the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, she also had enjoyed the fellowship of the Advance Home Demonstration Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jarvis Parks; an infant son, Thomas Gene Parks; her sisters, Gertie Sutton and Evelyn Hassell; her brothers, Herbert Sutton, and Horace and Melvin Hassell; and by her son-in-law, Wayne “Flap” Sawyer.
Surviving are her daughter, Loretta Sawyer Shaw and husband Holt of Edenton; two grandchildren, Thomas Wayne Sawyer of Kitty Hawk, and Greer DeVine and husband Jarret of Greenville; and four great-grandchildren, Miranda, Victoria, and Wayne Sawyer, and Leicyn DeVine. Also surviving are Mrs. Parks’ “adopted family”, Linda Harrison, and Reba, Perry, and Hunter Wynns.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery, and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Bob Young. Friends may join the family Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the residence.
