Forest Durwood Evans, 88, of 202 Turner Road, Eure, NC, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2017, at his daughter Vicky’s home, in Sunbury, where he was surrounded by his family.
Born in Gates County on January 12, 1929, he was the son of the late Forest Densmore and Betty Victoria Harrell Evans. A retired supervisor with Union Camp Corp., now International Paper, he was a member of Hobbsville Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and on various committees throughout the years. A founding member of the Gates County Rescue Squad, he had also served in the county’s Emergency Management department. A former Sea Scout, he later achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Other enjoyments included many mission trips through the years with different church groups.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Casper Evans; and by a daughter, Jacqueline Marie Evans.
Surviving are his wife of nearly eight years, Doris “Dot” Evans; and two daughters, Vicky Hollowell and husband James of Sunbury, and Virginia Goodman and husband Mark of Gatesville. Also surviving are Dot’s children, Kay Rountree and husband Barney of Gates, Phyllis Moore and husband Gene of Gatesville, and Norman Felton and companion Emy of Winton. Together Durwood and Dot shared nine grandchildren, Anita (Billy), Helen (Doug), John Wayne (Jeannette), Carolyn, Amy, Kathlyn, Eric (Shirley), Zach, and Jessica; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Hobbsville Baptist Church and will be conducted by Pastors Tim Dannelly, Wade Bennett, and Tom Hall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, or other times at either his and Dot’s residence on Turner Road, or at Vicky and James’ home, 1520 US Hwy 158 E., Sunbury.
