Joe Wisley Lee, 70, of the Frog Crossing community of Chowan County, Edenton, NC, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones.
Mr. Lee was born in Roper, NC on January, 21, 1947, and was the son of the late Arthur Miller Lee and Ida Bell Spruill Lee.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served from 1965-1967, and achieved SP-5 and E-5 rank. Community involvement included his being active with the Webelos Scouts for several years, serving as an auxiliary policeman for the Town of Edenton, serving as Chairman of the Town Planning Board, Treasurer for the Town of Edenton, and a term on the Edenton Town Council. He was a member and served as an usher at Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Civically, Mr. Lee served the Veterans of Foreign Wars as both Commander of the local William H. Coffield Post, and as its state membership chairman. A life member of both Post 6060 of the VFW, and the Disabled American Veterans, he was a member of the Edward G. Bond Post 40 of the American Legion, a past president of the Advance Ruritan Club, and a “Rooster” of the Edenton Jaycees.
The founder of Joe Lee Company of Edenton, Inc., he and his family have served Chowan County for more than 30 years, maintaining the business practice of never being closed. In addition to the various business interests of his company, he also taught HVAC at College of the Albemarle.
Preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Rosa Lee Gibson and Sue Lee, and by his brother, Lynn Lee, he is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Avis Forehand Lee; his daughter Penny, and her husband Jeff Baker; his grandson Steven Norman, and wife Sarah; and his great-grandson and namesake, Colburn Wisley Norman. Also surviving are his brother, John Lee of Edenton; his sister, Janet Chappelle of Elizabeth City; and his half-brother, Leon Ange of Maryland.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. Danny Gurganus. Entombment with military honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and all other times at the residence, 1121 Macedonia Road, Edenton.
