Butch Byrum

   Hiller Fahey “Butch” Byrum, Jr., 69, of 2243 Virginia Road, Edenton, NC, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Duke University Medical Center.

   Mr. Byrum was born in Chowan County on July 18, 1948, and was the son of the late H. Fahey Byrum, Sr. and Louise Bush Byrum. A farmer, he was the past president of Byrum Farms, Inc., a five generation family farm. A faithful member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church where he had formerly served in the Adult Choir, he had retired after 40 years of service in the Center Hill-Crossroads Volunteer Fire Dept., was a member of the Rocky Hock Ruritan Club, a director of the Albemarle Cotton Growers Co-Op, and was an avid Wolfpack Fan, having graduated North Carolina State University in 1968.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Rosa Pierce Byrum; and his brother-in-law, Zackie Harrell.

   Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Emily Bass Byrum; a daughter, Cyndi Byrum Small and husband Don of Mackeys; two sons, H. Fahey “Little Butch” Byrum, III and wife Rachel of Edenton, and William Bush Byrum and wife Alison of Wake Forest; two sisters, Kathryn B. Harrell of Gatesville, and Julia B. Nixon and husband James of Edenton; and nine grandchildren, Whitney, Mitch, Lake, Benson, Kindsey, D.J., Sydney, Carter, and Wilson.

   Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church, and will be conducted by his pastor, Dr. James Horton. Burial will follow on the family plot at Beaver Hill Cemetery, with Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Edenton, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
