Carlton Nixon Perry, of 906 Chambers Ferry Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2017. He was 79 years old.
Born on December 23, 1937, in Perquimans County, he was the son of the late Bristoe and Louise Nixon Perry. The family moved to Chowan County when he was a young child and he resided there for the rest of his life. A retired produce farmer, for many years he sold fruit and vegetables to local grocers and roadside stands in and around the Outer Banks. Retired from the North Carolina National Guard after 21 years of service, he was a member of the Chowan Edenton Optimist Club, with which he enjoyed serving the community and building long-lasting friendships. A member of Macedonia Baptist Church, and a charter member of the Advance Ruritan Club, he had also served on the Chowan County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. He loved to hunt and fish, and one of his greatest pleasures was spending time at the Indian Woods Hunt Club with his friends. Known for his knowledge, fairness, and ability to see the “big picture”, Carlton served two terms as a well-respected North Carolina Magistrate.
He was a tall man with work-worn hands, a dashing smile, a deep pleasant voice, and a big belly laugh. He enjoyed cross-country road trips and knew people everywhere he went. He was a storyteller who made friends easily.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, infant Paul Bristoe Perry, and Charles Ronald Perry.
He is survived by his bride of 60 years, Alice White Perry, and their two children, son Michael (Paula) Perry, grandchildren Allison (Jim) Hedgepeth and Melissa (Wade) Livingston, and great-grandchildren Sydney Kay and Jackson Perry Hedgepeth; and daughter Pat (Bill) Mansfield, grandchildren Betsy (Chad) Chappell, William (Bridget) Mansfield, and John (Samantha) Mansfield, and great-grandchildren Rebecca and Abbie Chappell, and Benjamin and Lovie Jayne Mansfield. Also surviving are his brother, Jack (Kathryn) Perry; a sister-in-law, Mary Perry; and a niece and nephews, Karen, Jack Jr., Jason, Judson, and Keith Perry.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church, and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. Bob Young, and his close friend, The Rev. Bernie Hurdle. The family will receive friends at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chowan Edenton Optimist Club, P.O. Box 1096, or to Macedonia Baptist Church, 1004 Macedonia Road, both in Edenton, NC 27932.
