Thomas Mack Sawyer, Sr., 89, of 688 Body Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, November 30, 2017 in Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.
Mr. Sawyer was born in Norfolk, VA on March 29, 1928, and was the son of the late Mack Bell Sawyer, Jr. and Lina Harrington Brickhouse. The retired owner and operator of Sawyer's Painting and Decorating, he was a soldier in the Salvation Army Corps and was active in its Men's Club. A veteran, he had served in the US Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosetta Long Sawyer, and by his sister, Marie Baker.
Surviving are his two daughters, Rebecca Shapiro (Charles) of Elizabeth City and Linda Orozco (Bob) of Simpsonville, SC; two sons, Thomas Sawyer, Jr. (Laurie) of Elizabeth City and Charles Oliver (Cheryl) of Grandy; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Marion Russell.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Salvation Army Corps, and will be officiated by Captains Kenny and Julie Igleheart. A private burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall of the Corps immediately following the service, and all other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, PO Box 1967, Elizabeth City, NC 27906.
