Mattie Lee Simpson Smithson

   Mattie Lee Simpson Smithson journeyed to her eternal home on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.

   She was the wife of 65 years to Ulyss E. “Smitty” Smithson of the home. Born on March 1, 1932 to the late Leslie L. Simpson and Mattie Brothers Simpson, she was the baby sister to Ethel S. Robinson, Lessie Mae Keeter, and John L. Simpson, who have preceded her in death.

   In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Betsy Smithson Meads and husband Charles, and her son, David Leslie Smithson and wife Terry. She is also survived by four grandsons, Barrett and Walker Smithson and Matthew and Charles R. Meads; and one great grandson, Jacob Meads. An infant daughter, Betsy Ann Smithson preceded her in death in 1954.

   In keeping with her wishes, there will be a private burial in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law at 2008 Johnson Road in Elizabeth City. A reception celebrating her life will be held Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 700 North Road Street, Elizabeth City.
