John Albert Byrum, Jr.

   John Albert Byrum, Jr., 81, formerly of Horseshoe Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, January 1, 2018 in Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.

   Mr. Byrum was born in Chowan County on October 27, 1936, and was the son of the late John Albert, Sr. and Sarah King Byrum. A retired machinist from Newport News Shipbuilding, he was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed membership in both the Harness Racing Association and Albemarle Houndsmen Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Albert Wayne Byrum.

   Surviving are his son, Glenn Byrum and wife Connie of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Faye Casper and Anne Copeland, both of Belvidere; two grandchildren, Chad Byrum and wife Brittany and Samantha Byrum and fiancé Ben; three great-grandchildren, Douglas, Logan, and Travis; and a special friend, Delma Owens.

   Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. Gary Nistler. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Friday. A private burial will be in the King Family Cemetery.
