Nell West Hollowell

Nell Elizabeth West Hollowell, 88, of 696 Daniels Road, Corapeake, NC, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018, in her home.

Mrs. Hollowell was born in Suffolk, VA, and was the daughter of the late James Ira and Cora Jones West. A faithful member of Eureka Baptist Church, she had been a member of the choir and had served as the nursery coordinator for many years. She had a special love for First Baptist Church in Suffolk where she was a member in her early years. Mrs. Hollowell enjoyed music throughout her life and especially enjoyed her love of piano in recent years.

“Miss Nell” will be fondly remembered across generations for her thoughtful notes of encouragement. She especially cared about young people and was always a strong supporter of youth activities in Gates County. Family, friends and neighbors will remember her as a role model for all.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 65 years, William Jordan Hollowell.  Surviving are three daughters, Kaye H. Barker of Gatesville, Dr. Jean Hollowell of Philadelphia, PA, and Sherry H. Epstein and husband, Ben, of Atlanta, GA; a son, Al Hollowell and wife, Sheila, of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Rob Barker and wife Alex, Jonathan Hollowell, Micah Epstein, and Dara Epstein; and two great-grandchildren, Coy Shepard and Hollowell Barker. She is also survived by special nieces and nephews, Angeline Hofman, Joy Hofler, Tom West, and Tommy Pruitt. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Robert L. Barker.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Eureka Baptist Church and will be conducted by The Reverend Billy Presley and her minister, The Rev. David Lawson. Burial will follow in the family plot in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall of the church following the service, and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests consideration of memorial contributions to Eureka Baptist Church, P.O. Box 68, or to the Corapeake-Sunbury Fire Department, P.O. Box 115, both in Corapeake, NC 27926.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Mrs. Hollowell’s caregivers, Sharon Hayer, Mildred Dent, and Monica Marcoux, and to a very special neighbor and friend, Lou Ann Turner.
