Melvin Hunter Chavis

   Melvin Hunter Chavis, Sr., 72, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, January 26, 2018 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.

  
   Mr. Chavis was born in Ahoskie on March 21, 1945, and was the son of the late Arthur Taylor and Cora Hunter Chavis. An Army veteran, he had been employed as a carpenter and painter through the years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Johnson of Atlanta, GA.

  
   Surviving are his two sons, Melvin Chavis, Jr. and wife Jeanette of Mount Olive and Timothy Sean Chavis of Warsaw; a sister, Margaret Harris of Elizabeth City; four grandchildren, Dustin, Alyssa, Elizabeth, and Hunter; a great-granddaughter, Damilia; and many nieces and nephews

  
   Private services will be held at a later date. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
