Helen Winn Bryan

Helen Winn Bryan, recently of Placitas, New Mexico and longtime resident of Gates, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2018, she was 90. Helen was succeeded by her husband Bob Bryan and survived by her son Mac Bryan, daughter-in-law Carole Bryan and daughter Tina Schott. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Michelle Lausch, Sean Bryan, Cheryl Nicely, Kevin Bryan, Michael Schott and Matthew Schott, and by 11 great grandchildren.   Born in Hebron, Virginia Helen was raised in Dinwiddie County Virginia where she graduated from Dinwiddie High School in June 1945. After school she served the American Red Cross at then Camp Pickett in Blackstone, Virginia during the final months of World War II. In 1948 she married Bob Bryan of Petersburg, Virginia and soon moved to Arlington, Virginia where she and Bob raised their family.   During her years in Northern Virginia Helen worked for the federal government rising to grade GS-15 before her retirement in 1974. Soon after, Helen and Bob settled in Gates, North Carolina where they resided until Bob’s death in 2012.   Helen enjoyed dancing, gardening, playing cards and the company of her family and friends. She had a keen wit and a joyful laugh which will be greatly missed by all who knew her.   Helen and Bob were dedicated members of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church, in Gates, and active members of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years, and most recently with Chapter 137 in Whaleyville, Virginia.   Services will be held in Arlington, Virginia at a date to be determined.
