Sy Hoying

   John Sylvester "Sy" Hoying, 68, of Hertford, NC, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018 in his home.

   Mr. Hoying was born in Sidney, OH on April 9, 1949, and was the son of the late Sylvester and Ruth Kirner Hoying. A graduate of Ohio State University, he owned and operated his own business in Pittsburgh, PA, working in the Refractory industry for over 40 years. An outdoorsman, he was a life-long golfer, and especially found great enjoyment in attending his grandchildren's activities.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Hoying, brothers-in-law, Thomas O'Reilly and Vincent Restivo; a sister-in-law, Mary O'Reilly; and by a niece, Nicole Hoying.

   Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Catherine O'Reilly Hoying; a daughter, Angela Pulkowski and husband Steve of Sewickley, PA; a son, Matthew Hoying and wife Maeve of Glenshaw, PA; and was proud "PoPo" to his grandchildren, Emma and Lily Pulkowski, and Reilly, Rowan, and McDonough Hoying. Also surviving are his brother, Thomas Hoying of Columbus, OH, a sister, Leslie Kantner and husband Rock of Centerville, OH; a sister-in-law, Sharon Hoying of Sidney; his father and mother-in-law, Leo and Norma O'Reilly of Minster, OH; sisters-in-law, Angie Niemeyer of Ft. Wayne, IN, Connie Restivo of Dublin, OH, and Joan O'Reilly Grieshop of Minster; and a brother-in-law, Kevin O'Reilly and wife Kerrie of Troy, OH.

   Memorial services will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Provider, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements, and online condolences may be made by visiting www.millerfhc.com.
