William Allen “Hawk” Crummey, 85, of 803 Bond Street, Edenton, NC, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Crummey was born in Chowan County on November 24, 1932, and was the son of the late William and Geraldine Sanford Crummey. Employed with the Town of Edenton for 52 years, he retired as the Director of Utilities, was the longest serving volunteer in the Edenton Fire Department where he retired as a Captain after more than 50 years of service, was a member and Past Master of Unanimity Masonic Lodge #7, a member and Past Worthy Patron of Edenton Chapter #302, The Order of The Eastern Star, a member of Edenton Baptist Church, a Civil War Re-enactor, and had served in the NC National Guard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Elizabeth James, Ella Gray Potts, Edna Basnight, and Sadie Forward; and by his wife, Marina Spruill Crummey, who passed away on December 7, 2017, just short of their celebrating 65 years of marriage.
Surviving are his three daughters and their husbands, Angela and Jimmy Forehand, Dianne and Louis Nixon, and Regina and Wayne Copeland, all of Edenton; nine grandchildren, April Bass (Patrick), J.C. Forehand (Kim), L.W. Nixon, Allen Nixon (Sarah), Ashley Venters (Hunter), Amanda Goodwin (Chris), Amber Young (Mark), Audrey Eley (Maurice), and Abby Tarkington (Corey); and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. David Brooks. Burial with Masonic Rites and Fireman’s Honors will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville Street, Edenton, NC 27932.
