John Donald “J.D.” Parrish, 79, of 432 Nixon Road, Edenton, NC, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 27, 2018 in his home.
Mr. Parrish was born in Chowan County on November 15, 1938, and was the son of the late John L. and Beulah Nixon Parrish. Retired from the Edenton Police Department having served as the Chief of Police for over 21 years and with the department for a total of nearly 30 years, in 1983 he was honored with the Edward G. Bond Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award. Memberships enjoyed included Rocky Hock Baptist Church, the Albemarle Law Enforcement Association, and his service as a former member of the Edenton Lions Club. He was a Navy veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Vochatzer, and by two brothers, Edward and Wayne Parrish.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Lois Allen Parrish; two daughters, Sherry Harris and husband Jim of Hertford and Terry Parks and husband Randy; a son, Jay Parrish and wife Felicia; a sister, Marjorie Carver, all of Edenton; five grandchildren, Clay Harris, Taylor Harrell and husband Shane, Alanna Parks, and Trey and Colby Parrish; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Family Life Center of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, and will be conducted by his pastor, Dr. James Horton. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the residence.
