Dorothy Upton Powell

   Dorothy Upton Powell, 85, of South Mills, NC, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018.

   Mrs. Powell was born in South Mills on October 5, 1932, and was the daughter of the late George Calvin and Sudie Sanderlin Upton. Employed for many years as a seamstress with Supak and Seventeen South Garment Company, she was a lifelong and faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and a past member of the South Mills Ruritan Club. 

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Powell, Sr.; sisters, Mildred Toler, Roxie Gwaltney, and Betty White; and by brothers, Willie, George, J.C., and Billy Upton.

   Surviving are her son, Leroy Powell, Jr. and wife Jenny of Camden; three grandsons, Lee Powell, III and wife Kimberly, Mark Powell and wife Andrea, and Brent Powell and wife Laurette; and four great-grandchildren, Grayden, Sudie, Ellis, and Nola, all of South Mills. Also surviving are a sister, Jeanette Onley; a brother, Johnny Upton, both of South Mills; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

   Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Ebenezer Baptist Church, and will be conducted by Pastors Darryl Stallings and Frank Thigpen. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the service, and all other times at Leroy and Jenny's home, 162 Sawyer's Creek Road, Camden.
