Melvin Eugene Baker, Sr., 79, of 801 Johnston Street, Edenton, NC, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2018, in Vidant Chowan Hospital where he was surrounded by his family, and where he was cared for by the Vidant Health & Home Hospice Group.
Mr. Baker was born in Chowan County on November 20, 1938, and was the son of the late Eugene Melvin and Ida Mae Brabble Baker. In earlier years he farmed and worked as a commercial fisherman, and later worked at Home Feed & Fertilizer, and Virginia Fork Produce. A faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church and the Lloyd Griffin Sunday School Class, he retired from the North Carolina National Guard after 33 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, James Wallace Baker; a sister, Lessie Lassiter Fuller; a brother, William Edward Lassiter; and a sister-in-law, Frances W. Moore.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Marie Wilson Baker; a daughter, Stacey Baker Banks of Edenton; a son, Eugene Baker (Steve Casper) of Belvidere; two grandchildren, Sophie and Bailey Banks; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Harris, Mildred Boyce, and Carolyn Forehand, all of Edenton, Marguerite Parrish of Owens Burrough, KY, and Mabel Butt of Suffolk, VA; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Wilson of Edenton.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. David Brooks. Friends may join the family at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lloyd Griffin Scholarship Fund, Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville Street, Edenton, NC 27932.
