Shirley Harrell Russell Cox, 86, of 1216 Cofield Point Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018, in her home where she was surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Cox was born in Pasquotank County on April 8, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Johnnie and Janie Stallings Harrell. The former owner and operator of The Hertford Café, in the early 1970’s she worked as a nurse’s assistant in the nursery of Chowan Hospital. She was a member of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Thomas S. Russell, W.E. “Jiggs” Burner, and W.D. “Bill” Cox; her brother, Floyd; and by her sisters, Katherine and Evelyn.
Surviving are two daughters, LaWanda Hollowell (Johnny) of Tyner, and Tara Lane (Johnny) of Edenton; four sons, Gary Russell (Angela) of Edenton, Steve Russell (Beverly) of Elizabeth City, Giles Russell (Sherry) of South Mills, and Keith Russell (Pam) of Tyner; her sister, Linda Phillips of Kalama, Washington; 15 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.
Friends may join the family Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Crystal Etheridge and the other caring staff of Amedisys Hospice for the wonderful care and comfort given to their mother in her time of declining health.
