Alfred Franklin Stallings, Jr.

   Alfred Franklin “June Bug” Stallings, Jr., 94, of 521 Sandy Cross Road, Hobbsville, NC, passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018, in Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation Center.

   Mr. Stallings was born in Perquimans County on February 15, 1924, and was the son of the late Alfred F., Sr. and Allie Bunch Stallings. His family moved to Gates County in 1927, and later he started school at Hobbsville with the nickname “June Bug”. A graduate of the Hobbsville High School Class of 1941, he was inducted in the Army in November 1944. Serving in World War II, his unit was selected to work in the Nuremburg Trials.

   Returning to Gates County after the war, he continued the family work of farming throughout his life, while also serving as a rural mail carrier with the Postal Service of 28 years. A member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon and as chairman of the Building Committee. Community involvement included his being a charter member of the Hobbsville Ruritan Club for 50 years, chairman of the Hobbsville Water Shed for 32 years, a member of the NC Peanut Growers Committee for 3 years, and serving on the Gates County Board of Education for 24 years, (chairman from 1975-78).

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Doris Jean Rountree Stallings; by his son, Terry Wayne Stallings; by sisters, Myrtle and Helen; and by brothers, Ellis, Roy, Emmitt, and Fred.

   Surviving are his son, Scotty F. Stallings and wife, Cindy; two grandchildren, Lori Stallings Lolies and husband, Nick, and Adam Stallings and wife, Samantha; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Aiden Lolies, and Dylan Stallings, all of Hobbsville; and by a brother, Lofton Stallings of Indiana.

   Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Sandy Cross Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Tim Dannelly. A private burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the service, and all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sandy Cross Baptist Church.
