Lela Winslow Bundy

   During the course of our lives we have certain goals that we all aim to achieve. For 2018, Lela had two goals left to complete. The first was to reach her 90th birthday, which she accomplished on June 16th where she was surrounded by close friends and family. The second was to join her husband Calvin, who preceded her in death six years earlier on April 20, 2012. She reached that final goal on Sunday, September 2, 2018.

   Lela Winslow Bundy was born June 16, 1928, and was married to Calvin Miller Bundy for almost 68 years. A faithful member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, she sang in its choir, was a member of its United Methodist Women, and served as a leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Lela loved to work in her vegetable garden and flower beds, and while in season, she was always furnishing beautiful flowers to decorate her church. She also loved to sit on her pier and fish late in the afternoon, and continued to do that until her health prevented her from going up and down the hill leading to the water.

   Waiting to greet her after death were her father, Elmer Ray Winslow; her mother, Bessie Lee White Winslow; her sister, Mary Love; and brothers, Bernard (Red), Carl, Winfred (Wink), Allen, and Johnny Winslow.

   Left to cherish their memories of her are her daughter, Phyllis Bundy Hoover; and son, Calvin Edward Bundy, both of Hertford; grandson, Jason Cartwright (David) of Berthoud, CO; brother, Billy Lee Winslow (Janice); sisters-in-law, Vivian Winslow and Julia Ann Bundy Onley; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

   Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by the Rev. Carroll Bundy and the Rev. Michael Williams. A private burial will be next to her husband in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the residence, or in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service on Wednesday.

   A special heartfelt “thank you” goes out to the incredible staff of Hall 200 at Elizabeth City Health & Rehab, and to the outstanding Hospice team, for the care and comfort they gave to Lela in her period of declining health.
